Just because you’ve lost your job doesn’t mean it’s time to start a business. But if you have a passion that can be translated into a business, I encourage you to go for it!
The anxiety you feel is natural and surprisingly easy to overcome… by action!
- Identify your passion! What would you do for free if you were able? How does this meet your needs?
- Translate your passion into a product/service. How does what you love to do solve someone else’s problem? Is it a better mouse trap? Does it give people more time for other things? Does it save them money? Does it make their life or work easier?
- Identify the EXACT person who would MOST benefit from using your product/service. Who is your ideal customer? What is his/her life like? How and where do they get their information? Where do they hang out? How do they spend their spare time?
- Plan your work and work your plan! Take the time to write a business plan. Include a workflow chart so that you know what you have to do in your work day/week/month.
- Get help! Do you need help with any aspect of creating or running your business? Do you need help at home, with the kids, keeping house?
- Get your message out. If you don’t market your business, you won’t have a business. How is your ideal customer suppose to find you if you don’t get your message to them?
- Stop selling what you do. Market the solutions you offer. No one cares what you do until they find out how it will benefit them.
- You can only budget so much for marketing so make it count! Talk to anyone but Only spend your marketing dollar on your ideal customer! Advertise in the publications they read, hang out in the places they hang out. Your advertising dollar and networking efforts will go farther and bring you more business than the ‘shotgun’ approach.
- Be fearless! Starting a business is a very exciting time and will change your life and your family’s. Finally, you can indulge your passion, control your schedule and align your values. Silly rabbit, this is no time to indulge your insecurities.
- Get a Coach! Michael Jordan is a professional athlete. Do you think he went one day without a coach?! Well, you are a professional too! There is no substitute for having someone with experience and a full toolbox in your corner.
You ARE great! People need what you have to offer! Go! Fight! Win!
